Hinsdale Central went into the Lions’ den on Friday night and got scratched up pretty good.

Lyons Township won 9 of 14 matches in the West Suburban Silver season finale for both teams in LaGrange, in a 31-24 Senior Night win for the Lions.

“It’s the last home dual for our seniors, they all got fired up, and we got fired up,” Lyons Township’s Lucas Polka said. “We did well tonight. Everyone wrestled tough.”

“They won. They were the better team tonight,” Hinsdale Central coach Jason Hayes said. “We shouldn’t have lost at certain weights and we shouldn’t have got pinned. We got outwrestled in certain situations.”

The Lions’ Kevin Reimer and the Red Devils’ Brad O’Donnell kicked off the night in wild fashion at 125 pounds. Each wrestler earned a takedown through two periods and O’Donnell grabbed a 5-3 lead with a reversal to start the third.

Reimer escaped, O’Donnell was tagged for stalling, and Reimer used a front headlock in overtime to post the winning takedown in a 7-5 decision.

Lions’ senior Ozzy Sandoval posted four takedowns in a 9-2 win at 130, over Central’s David Hutchinson, setting up a dramatic match at 135 between Drew Bates and Terry Ward.

Bates is the usual starting 130-pounder for LT but with teammate Matt Nora (140) recently lost for the season with an ankle injury, coach Griff Powell bumped his guys around from 130 to 160 on Friday.

The Lions’ Bates used a pair of takedowns to build a 5-0 lead after two periods, but Ward reversed him to start the third. Bates escaped and led 6-3 with only second left in the match when Ward pulled it out of the fire. The Central senior used a spladle to pin Bates at the final buzzer, tying the dual at 6-6.

The next four matches went to the Lions, starting with Jack Windmoeller’s 6-4 decision over Central’s Max Evers at 140. Lucas Polka and Steve Stefani squared off next at 145 and a wild first period featured a Polka takedown and a takedown and reversal by Stefani.

With the score tied 4-4, Stefani chose down to start the second period. Polka turned and pinned him at the 2:45 mark to give his squad a 15-6 lead.

“I didn’t come out in the first period as strong as I would have liked,” Polka said. “In the second period I got fired up and started wrestling tough. I knew I could take him on top. I arm-chopped him, worked his wrist hard for a little while, threw in my cross-face and stuck him.”

LT’s Jack Pearson made it 18-6 with a 5-1 decision over Jack Hellwig at 152. Pearson led 2-0 after two periods, and used an escape and a third-period takedown for the final margin of victory.

RJ Dilcher was the next Lion to come up big for his team, bumping up from 152 to 160 to take on Central’s Joe Strocchia and grinding out a 3-0 decision win.

Hinsdale Central (19-2, 4-2 in the WSS) stopped the bleeding at 171 thanks to a David Lutz pin over LT’s Mike Rende, but the Lions answered at 189 when Kyle Shinall posted a 6-3 decision over the Red Devils’ Justin Katzovitz.

LT’s Joe Gonzalez gave his side its eighth win of the night and a 27-12 lead with a 9-3 win over Central’s Sean Sullivan, before the Red Devils’ Jack Allen pinned Brian Pieroth at 1:17 in the heavyweight bout.

With three matches left to wrestle, Central freshman Tommy Ward kept his squad’s hopes alive with a 14-3 major decision win over Conor Condon at 103, cutting the Lions’ lead to 27-21.

But the Lions’ Bob Gavrick dashed the visitors’ hopes with a 12-4 major decision at 112 pounds, over the Red Devils’ Matt Freyn. Central’s Ernest Battaglia ended the night’s wrestling with a straight decision win over Carter Beebe.

Lyons Township finished the regular season with a 14-6 record overall in duals, 4-2 in WSS duals.

“I was happy with the way we wrestled,” Powell said. “We had guys wrestling up a weight in the lineup and they came through for us. The regionals start in a week and I like the way we’re wrestling right now.”
