Brother Rice's Mikey Avelar was in a tough spot Saturday, trailing in the third period of his Class 3A De La Salle Sectional final against an opponent ranked No. 2 in the state.

But Avelar has faced greater adversity than this and stared it down. And somehow he wriggled out of this jam, too, reversing Oak Park's Chris Dardanes to his back for the five-point move that clinched a 5-2 victory and the 135-pound title.

“He always told me he was proud of my wrestling, my career and how well I was doing,” Avelar said. “I know he's proud of me now. I just want to do it for him.”

Avelar's win was just another dramatic moment in the sectional, which showcased six wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the state. The top four placers at each weight advance to next weekend’s state meet in Champaign.

Five of the top-ranked wrestlers won: Oak Park's Nick Dardanes (41-1 at 140), Lane's Max Schneider (36-0 at 145), Brother Rice's Malik Taylor (33-1 at 152), Leyden's Dan Kiebler (33-1 at 215) and Hinsdale Central's Jack Allen (40-1 at 285). The only No. 1 to fall was Mount Carmel's Charles Argue (37-6), who lost 3-2 on an overtime tiebreaker to No. 2 Jahwon Akui of St. Rita.

“I'm not tired of facing him. I want to compete against the best,” said Akui (20-1), who escaped with 22 seconds left in sudden death to avenge last week's OT loss to Argue in the Bogan Regional final. The pair also met for the Catholic League title, with Akui winning 3-2.

“I'm happy with the win, but I've got a lot to work on,” Akui said. “I've got to get my offense going. When I get my offense going. I can beat anybody in the state.”

Also among the champs was Mather 125-pounder Nikko Liotta (34-5), a two-time Public League and regional runner-up. “Last year I wasn’t always finishing,” he said. “This year I am finishing.”

Other winners were Oak Park's Sam Brooks (32-6 at 160) and Ben Brooks (34-3 at 189), Leyden's Jesus Payan (27-6 at 103), St. Rita's Johnny Anderson (24-10 at 112), Morton's Emmanuel Macedo (31-3 at 119) and Lyons' Drew Bates (24-6 at 130).

Oak Park, Leyden, Hinsdale Central and Mount Carmel paced the qualifying by advancing six wrestlers apiece. St. Rita, Lyons, Brother Rice and Proviso West all qualified four wrestlers.
