Hinsdale, IL — A year ago, David Lutz was at a low point after being injured all of wrestling season.

Now the Hinsdale Central senior is at the other end of the spectrum of emotions after qualifying for the individual state tournament for the first time.

Lutz was one of a program-record six Red Devils to advance out of the Class 3A De La Salle sectional last Saturday.

“That is really cool,” Lutz said. “It’s not too fun for anyone to go downstate without their teammates. It says a lot about the direction this team is headed and how well the coaches have been doing with us.”

The senior finished fourth in the loaded 171-pound bracket, losing to Charles Argue of Mount Carmel in the semifinals and then dropping a 3-2 decision to Khari Washington of Proviso West in the third-place match.

“It was a tough bracket,” he said. “The kids that got first and second, they are ranked first and second in the state. The kid that I wrestled for third, I’ve wrestled before and beat him but he is good. It is a big accomplishment for me, especially coming from a tough sectional and beating the kids I did.”

Lutz is pumped about the opportunity at hand and has a lofty goal for down at Champaign.
“I’m really excited,” he said. “It was definitely a goal of mine at the beginning of the year to make it downstate and now I can say I did it.

“Definitely my goal is to place down at state and it is definitely possible. I have to wrestle like I have all season. I’ve never wrestled the kid I have first (Deerfield’s Jeremy Fahler); he got first at his sectional. But I didn’t really care who I got paired up with.”

Joining Lutz at Assembly Hall will be junior Jack Allen, who improved to 40-1 while capturing the title at 285-pounds. Allen defeated James Buss of De La Salle 7-5 in the championship match.

Freshman Ernest Battaglia was the runner-up at 119 after falling to Manny Macedo of Morton 12-8 in the final. Fellow freshman Tommy Ward was also second at 103.

Junior Terry Ward added a third-place showing at 135 and Joe Strocchia was third at 160.

“The kids performed well at sectionals,” said Hinsdale Central head coach Jason Hayes. I was happy for the kids and the program. It’s a testament to how much work (former coach) Jim Zajicek has put into the program, along with the rest of the coaching staff.

“Some of the guys overcame some adversity and fought strong until the end. We always talk that desire and attitude will take them far in the state tournament series.”
