Doings Coverage of State Championship Tournament
Allen, Strocchia place second at State

February 23, 2010

By KEN RYAN kryan@pioneerlocal.com

WRESTLING -- When Hinsdale Central senior Joe Strocchia qualified for State in his final opportunity, he knew it was a huge accomplishment.

He wanted more, though.

Strocchia went on to place second at the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the University of Illinois' Assembly Hall in Champaign.

"I wish I would've won the state championship, but I'm not unhappy," said Strocchia, who competed at 160 pounds. "Second at State is pretty good. It was an awesome experience. The grand march (introducing the state qualifiers) and everything was a once in a lifetime experience. I had people texting me and telling me they were watching me live on the Internet, so everything was pretty cool."

Hinsdale Central junior Jack Allen also finished second for the second year in a row.

After taking second at 215 pounds as a sophomore, Allen (43-2) lost the 285-pound championship match to Evanston's Jeffrey Brown 3-1 on a last-second takedown. Brown (49-1) is a University of Miami (Fla.) football recruit.

"It didn't turn out like I was planning," Allen said. "The loss hurt a lot. I'm trying not to think about it. It just doesn't feel as good as it did last year. Last year it was a good feeling just being there, but this year it wasn't good enough just being in the final. I wanted to win it. I wanted the outcome to be different this time.

Strocchia and Allen matched the program's best State finish, but Allen was hoping to become the program's first state champion.

He pinned Maine South's Sean Sullivan in 2 minutes, 49 seconds in his first match and then beat Granite City's Casey Gushleff 3-0 before pinning Edwardsville's Andrew Ellington in 4:22 in the semifinals.

"The loss hurt Jack pretty bad and I felt bad for him because he put in a lot of time and effort," first-year Hinsdale Central coach Jason Hayes said. "It's a great accomplishment being in the finals twice, but at the same time, he's hurting because he wants to be No. 1. At this level, everything counts and Jack made one little mistake and the guy spun around him. Give him a little time off and he'll be back and ready to go. He'll be a good leader for us next year."

Allen doesn't plan on another runner-up finish as a senior.

"I want to win it next year," Allen said. "I'm going to work harder and harder every week and keep pushing."

Strocchia (39-9) wishes he had another chance at a state title like his teammate after losing to Oak Park sophomore Sam Brooks 5-3 in the final.

The highlight of the day for Strocchia was upsetting Neuqua Valley's Nick Proctor (41-3), who was ranked No. 1 in the state and placed second at State at 160 last season, in the semifinals. Strocchia pulled out an 8-6 overtime victory.

"Upsetting Proctor was great. I peaked that match," Strocchia said. "The crowd went wild after I won and I was just so happy. I wrestled the best match of my career."

Brooks won a 13-3 major decision over Strocchia earlier in the season, but the rematch was much closer.

"He was the only one that majored me the whole year, but I didn't let my nerves get to me," Strocchia said. "I just wrestled, but that match didn't go too well. I couldn't get my offense going and it just didn't work out the way I wanted. I was little upset because I wanted to win real bad."

Strocchia also beat Crystal Lake South's Kean Loupee 8-6 in overtime and Dowers Grove South's Willie Anaya 9-6.

"Joe had a great tournament," Hayes said. "He wrestled probably the best match of his career when he knocked off (Proctor). It was a huge win for him. I was happy for him, he worked his butt off and just came up a little short in the finals."

Senior David Lutz (40-8) finished 1-2, losing his first match to Deerfield's Jeremy Fahler 7-0 before bouncing back to pin Schaumburg's Danny Malik in 2:31 and then being eliminated with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Buffalo Grove's Jamey Zabrin, who went on to place sixth.

"David Lutz was a match away from being a State placer," Hayes said. "I've enjoyed working with David. He was our captain, he's a great kid that works hard. I'll miss working with him and having that type of kid in the room. We'll miss his overall presence in the program."

Hinsdale Central had a program-best six wrestlers at State and had two in the state championship match for the first time.

Hinsdale Central freshman Tommy Ward (17-10) lost a 22-6 technical fall to Belleville West's Mech Spraggins at 103 pounds and then dropped an 11-7 decision to Crystal Lake South's Nick Fontanetta. Ward's opponents had a combined record of 85-3, with Spraggins placing second and Fontanetta getting third.

Hinsdale Central freshman Ernest Battaglia (37-10) lost to Batavia's Logan Arlis 11-5 at 119 in his only match. Arlis finished third.

Hinsdale Central junior Terry Ward (34-11) lost 7-0 at 135 to Minooka's Sean Kenny (37-9), who placed sixth.

"It was a great experience," Hayes said. "Overall, it was a great year for the kids and we're heading in the right direction. Hopefully we can win conference and a state title in the near future. That's the plan."
